Upper West Side
The Upper West Side lies between Central Park and the Hudson River above 59th Street and below West 125th Street. The neighborhood is accessible to lower Manhattan and more northern points via two subway lines, one on Broadway (1,2,3), and one on Central Park West (A,B,C,D). Family-friendly and decidedly upscale, the Upper West Side has a more intellectual, casual reputation than its neighbor to the east of the park, the Upper East Side. From a historical perspective, the artists, writers and other intellectuals who have resided on the Upper West Side is staggering, and the neighborhood continues to be a destination for the cultural-savvy New Yorker. The Upper West Side offers everything from Lincoln Center’s performing arts to the artifacts and planetarium of the Museum of Natural History. The New York Historical Society and The Manhattan Children's Museum are also nearby. The neighborhood nearly offers something for everyone. Shoppers don’t need to stray far from Broadway to find everything they need, with stores for bargain hunters and well-heeled shoppers alike, even foodies – grocery mainstays Fairway and Zabars are also located on the throughway. Anchoring the southern stretch of the Upper West Side is the Time Warner Center, a new development of luxury condos, high-end shops, fine dining, and a massive underground Whole Foods. Sidewalk cafes, diners, and delis are equally matched in number with more upscale grills, bars, and three-course-meal restaurants throughout the neighborhood. And for recreation, the resident has both Central Park and Riverside Park within easy walking distance. Although the Upper West Side may seem like an incongruous mix, it can be divided into different areas, each with its own distinct buildings and character. The 70s and 80s are home to stately “Classic Six” prewar apartments – three bedrooms, a living room, dining room, and kitchen. Riverside Drive and West End Avenue are made up of brownstones and grand scale buildings that are now large co-op units. Modern new condo developments punctuate the southwestern reaches of the neighborhood.
