Morningside Heights spans the area from 110th to 125th Street, from the east end of Morningside Park to the Hudson River. It is a quaint neighborhood situated between the Upper West Side and Harlem, and is mostly associated with its colleges and other public institutions – Columbia University most prominent among them. This geographic location and concentration of academic institutions gives Morningside Heights its unique combination of college town and urban America, drawing students, faculty and young families alike. Two features figure prominently into Morningside Heights – parks and stunning architecture. Riverside Park, with bike and walking paths along the Hudson, features a bird sanctuary, a skate park and a set of clay tennis courts, as well as Grant’s Tomb, the final resting place of Ulysses S. Grant. Morningside Park slopes down toward Harlem, 30-acres of rugged hills cultivated by the famed architects of Central Park. The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine is a marvel of Romanesque-Byzantine and Gothic Styles that was new in 1892 with on-going restoration recently completed. A number of great restaurants have been moving into Morningside Heights, although you’re still guaranteed to find many dining options on a student’s budget. Cafés are prevalent, including the legendary, old-world Hungarian Pastry Shop. Shopping is basic; the plus being it includes a number of affordable grocery stores. Most shopping and dining options are found along Broadway, its main thoroughfare – among them Tom’s Restaurant, a regular on Seinfeld. A subdued nightlife scene exists for residents that want to venture out at night without having to take a ride downtown. Music lovers will appreciate Columbia’s Miller Theater, showcasing world-class musical performers in genres from jazz to opera. Morningside Heights was chosen by New York Magazine as an up-and-coming residential hot spot in “Where to Live in 2014”.
